Anyone who knows me will tell you that mind flayers (AKA illithids) are my favorite monster in Dungeons & Dragons—they're so great, I wrote an adventure featuring a mind flayer front and center. I love them because they're the D&D experience in microcosm; mind flayers are a mixture of horrifying adrenaline and B-movie camp, just like a D&D game with your friends is a mix of epic.
